Bettermade is built to run almost entirely on your device. This page explains,
plainly, what the app can access, what actually leaves your phone, and what
never does.
01 Overview
Bettermade has no account system — no email, no password, no sign-in.
We don't keep a database of users. Your goals, habits, journal entries, meals, and style catalog
live in local storage on your device. A small number of features send a
request to our own backend server to generate an AI response — those
are called out explicitly below. The free app also shows ads from Google
AdMob, described in the Ads section.
02 Profile & onboarding
During setup you can optionally enter your name, age, school/grade, sex,
height, weight, activity level, business or goals you're working toward,
and a daily schedule. This is stored locally on your device using
standard iOS storage (UserDefaults and SwiftData) and is used only to
personalize the app — calculating calorie targets, generating an AI
schedule, tailoring the AI coach's tone. None of it is transmitted to us
as an identity or account record.
03 Health data
Read-only
If you grant HealthKit access, Bettermade reads your step count, active
energy, resting heart rate, heart-rate variability, sleep, and workouts to power the
Kinetic dashboard. The app requests read-only access
— it does not write workouts, body metrics, or anything else back
to Apple Health. Health data is used entirely on-device and is never
transmitted to our servers or anyone else's.
04 Camera & photos
Wardrobe can use your camera to scan clothing items, Kinetic can use it to
photograph food, and you can add existing photos from your photo library or take
progress photos. Clothing photos are analyzed on-device (Apple's Vision framework
identifies dominant colors and item type). Photos you save stay in the app's local
storage on your device. If you use the food-photo estimate, that photo is sent to our
backend and an AI service to produce the estimate.
05 Your content & AI features
Journal entries, logged meals and workouts, habits, and closet items are
stored locally. A few features are AI-powered and work by sending a
request to our backend (hosted on Railway) to generate a response:
AI Coach chat
Your message and recent conversation history are sent to generate a reply.
AI schedule builder
Your stated goals, wake/sleep times, and tasks are sent to generate a daily plan.
AI course builder
The topic you want to learn is sent to generate lessons and exercises.
Food photo estimate
The photo you take of a meal is sent to estimate its nutrition.
AI outfit & workout generation
A description of your items or preferences is sent to generate a suggestion.
Our backend passes these requests to an AI service provider only to produce
the response shown to you. We do not use this content for advertising, and we do not
sell it. We do not tie these requests to any account, since none exists.
06 Microphone, speech & Face ID
Speaking practice in Learning uses the microphone and Apple's speech recognition,
configured to transcribe on your device, to give you feedback. Recordings are not sent to
us. Face ID is used only to lock your private profile vault on your phone; we never receive
your biometric data.
07 Notifications
Reminders (like a streak-at-risk nudge) are scheduled locally on your
device using iOS's notification system. Bettermade does not operate a
push-notification server and cannot send you a message remotely.
08 Ads
Bettermade is free and shows ads through Google AdMob. We set ads to
non-personalized and treat the app as child-directed for ad purposes, so ads are
not chosen from your activity across other apps and websites, and Bettermade does not ask
permission to track you. Google may still collect technical information such as device
type, operating system, IP address, and how ads perform in order to deliver ads and prevent
fraud. See Google's privacy policy for how it handles that information.
09 Sharing & sale of data
We do not sell your data and we do not track you across other companies' apps or websites.
The outside parties involved are: our hosting provider (Railway) and AI service provider,
for the AI features above; Google AdMob, for ads; Apple, for Health access and the app itself;
and, if you use Wardrobe's redeem-code feature, a separate Night.inc service that validates
purchase codes from 2AM. Optional usage statistics are off by default and only sent if you
turn them on in Settings; they contain an anonymous install ID and which part of the app was
used, never your content. We may disclose information if the law requires it.
10 Retention & deletion
Because almost everything lives on your device, deleting the app
deletes your data. There's no server-side account to separately close.
AI requests are used to generate the response and are not tied to a
profile of you. Our server keeps ordinary technical logs (such as IP address and request time) for security and
troubleshooting. To ask about anything transmitted through an AI request, contact us
using the details below.
11 Security
All network requests use HTTPS. Local data is protected by the same
encryption and sandboxing every iOS app relies on. No method of storage
or transmission is 100% secure, and we can't guarantee absolute
security, but we don't ask you to trust a central database with your
information in the first place.
12 Children's privacy
Bettermade is meant for teens and adults and is not directed at children under 13.
We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a
child has provided us information through the app's AI features,
contact us and we'll address it.
13 Changes to this policy
If this policy changes in a way that affects what data the app
accesses or how it's used, we'll update the effective date above and,
for material changes, note it in the app.
